Before You Start: Frame-Mount vs Wall-Mount

How you measure depends on your mounting method. Understanding this first will ensure accurate measurements.

Frame-Mount

Bars attach directly to the window frame. Best for wood or vinyl frames with sufficient depth.

Measure:
  • • Inside frame width
  • • Inside frame height
  • • Frame depth (must be 1.5"+ for mounting)

Wall-Mount

Bars attach to the wall around the window. Required for metal frames or thin frames.

Measure:
  • • Total opening width (including frame)
  • • Total opening height (including frame)
  • • Add 2-4" for bracket overlap

Step 1: Measure the Width

The width measurement is the horizontal distance your bars need to span.

For Frame-Mount:

  1. 1Measure from the inside left edge of the frame to the inside right edge
  2. 2Take measurements at top, middle, and bottom of the window
  3. 3Use the smallest measurement (windows aren't always perfectly square)

SWB Bar Width

All SWB models have a fixed 16-inch bar width. For windows wider than 16", install multiple units side-by-side. For example, a 32" window needs 2 units.

Step 2: Measure the Height

The height measurement determines where your bars will be positioned vertically.

For Frame-Mount:

  1. 1Measure from the inside top edge of the frame to the inside bottom edge
  2. 2Take measurements at left, center, and right sides
  3. 3Use the smallest measurement

Telescopic Advantage

SWB bars have telescopic height adjustment:

  • • Model A: 35" to 65"
  • • Model B: 35" to 61"
  • • Model A/EXIT: 35" to 65"

As long as your height falls within this range, no exact measurement is needed— the bars adjust to fit!

Step 3: Check for Obstructions

Before ordering, note anything that might interfere with installation:

  • Window handles/cranks: Ensure bars won't block operation
  • Locks: Must remain accessible after bar installation
  • Trim/molding: May need to be accounted for in measurements
  • AC units: Seasonal units may require removable bars
  • Window sensors: Alarm sensors shouldn't be blocked

Common Measurement Mistakes

Measuring only once
Always measure 3 times at different points—windows are rarely perfectly square
Measuring the glass instead of the frame
Bars mount to the frame, not the glass. Measure frame-to-frame
Forgetting about window operation
Open and close the window to ensure bars won't interfere with handles or mechanisms
Not accounting for exterior trim
For wall-mount, measure past any exterior trim you want the bars to cover
Mixing up width and height
Width = horizontal (side to side), Height = vertical (top to bottom)

Recording Your Measurements

Keep a record of each window you measure. Here's a simple format:

Example Measurement Record:
Location: Kitchen - North Wall
Width: 32" (need 2 units)
Height: 48" (within 35-65" range ✓)
Mount Type: Frame-mount
Notes: Crank handle on right side
